From the producers of last season’s Jessie nominated musical Mozart & Salieri, and 2014’s Ovation Award nominated Beggar’s Opera, comes a grotesque new version of one of the world’s best known Christmas stories. This December, EBENEZER brings Dickens’ beloved Christmas Carol rocketing to the 21st century with an original musical score and re-imagined story that celebrates the macabre aspects of the original novel.

EBENEZER stars Andrew Wheeler as Ebenezer Scrooge, with Thomas Conlin Jones, Mike Stack, Melissa Morris, Masae Day, and Simon Webb as Jacob Marley. Directed by David Newham. Musical Direction by Daniel Deorksen. Choreography by Marlise McCormick and Anna Kuman. Costume Design by Ines Ortner

EBENEZER is a ghost story: Ebenezer Scrooge re-lives his nightmarish life in a single night wrought with wrenching loss, exploitation, isolation, and unrequited love. Narrated by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future and orchestrated by Ebenezer’s long-dead business partner Jacob Marley, Ebenezer’s path to redemption seems a futile one. But a man must find kindness in a harsh and unyielding world, and EBENEZER reminds us that there cannot be darkness without light.

EBENEZER, A Christmas Ghost Story

Created by Daniel Deorksen and David Newham

David Newham’s latest adaptation distills the original novel into five fantasias, a technique developed through his earlier adaptations (Beggar’s Opera, Mozart & Salieri), modernizing classic works by paring them down to dream-like sequences of text, movement, dance and music. In EBENEZER, Newham explores the more mature side of Dickens’ novel and draws on our familiarity with the tale to throw a fresh light on the story of Ebenezer Scrooge.

EBENEZER features a new musical score by Daniel Deorksen, whose diverse body of work draws boldly on a range of styles, from classic Jazz to Tom Waits meets Frank Zappa and The Muppets. The EBENEZER musical score will be performed live by the cast of seven on a range of classical and modern instruments.
