Following the launch of the company’s first performance space, Tyrant Studios, in May of 2018, Seven Tyrants Theatre is excited to announce a season of four plays, each of which will premiere in the company run studio space. The 2018/2019 season of plays invites Vancouver audiences to enjoy a mix of award winning contemporary stories as well as thrilling new adaptations of classics.

Seven Tyrants Theatre’s 2018/2019 Season:

Krapp’s Last Tape

By Samuel Beckett

Directed by David Thomas Newham, Starring Linden Banks

Produced by Seven Tyrants Theatre
October 5th – October 26, 2018 / Tyrant Studios

Samuel Beckett’s absurdist one-man masterpiece

The Off-Broadway sensation, a tour-de-force for one man, is the most affectionate portrait of a character that Beckett has ever done: an aging man who lives a lonely and shabby existence in a darkened room. At year’s end, he takes out a bottle of wine, a banana and his tape recorder, and he listens as his own voice from the past recounts the glories and hopes of his youth.

Doubt: A Parable

By John Patrick Shanley

Directed by Bill Devine, Starring Tallulah Winkelman and David Thomas Newham

Produced by Seven Tyrants Theatre

November 23rd – December 14th, 2018 / Tyrant Studios

What do you do when you’re not sure?

Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award. In this brilliant and powerful drama, Sister Aloysius, a Bronx school principal, takes matters into her own hands when she suspects the young Father Flynn of improper relations with one of the male students.

“All the elements come invigoratingly together like clockwork in John Patrick Shanley’s provocative new play, DOUBT, a gripping story of suspicion cast on a priest’s behavior that is less about scandal than about fascinatingly nuanced questions of moral certainty. Something rare for this season: a laudable new American play.” —Variety.

“An eloquent and provocative investigation of truth and consequences. A gripping mystery, tightly written.” —Time Out NY.

King Richard and His Women

Conceived and Adapted by Camyar Chai, Starring Daniel Deorksen

Based on Richard III by William Shakespeare

Produced by Seven Tyrants Theatre

March 8 – 30, 2019 / Tyrant Studios

“Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York”

A new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s stunning portrait of Machiavellian genius and the murderous quest for absolute power. In this original game of thrones we are engaged by a cunning, charismatic, and heartless tyrant who will stop at nothing to secure England’s crown. Camyar Chai’s new adaptation explores Richard III’s relationship with the powerful women surrounding this famous king.

A Steady Rain

By Keith Huff
Directed by Bill Devine, Starring Daniel Deorksen and David Thomas Newham

May 10 – 31, 2019 / Tyrant Studios

Back by popular demand, we are pleased to remount our Jessie Award winning production from last season

A dark duologue filled with sharp storytelling and biting repartee, A Steady Rain explores the complexities of a lifelong bond tainted by domestic affairs, violence, and the rough streets of Chicago. Joey and Denny have been best friends since kindergarten, and after working together for several years as policemen in Chicago, they are practically family: Joey helps out with Denny’s wife and kids; Denny keeps Joey away from the bottle. But when a domestic disturbance call takes a turn for the worse, their friendship is put on the line. The result is a harrowing journey into a moral gray area where trust and loyalty struggle for survival against a sobering backdrop of pimps, prostitutes, and criminal lowlifes.
