Antigone
(Workshopped/Performed in May/June, 2007)
Antigone was workshopped in May of 2007 at the Dorothy Somerset Studio Theatre, UBC. It was performed on May 31st and June 1st.
Emphasizing physical imagery and live music, Seven Tyrants’ dynamic retelling fused Robert Fagles’ superb translations of Sophocles’ Antigone and Oedipus at Colonus in order to realize a succinct and vivid distillation of this family’s epic story. The script blended present and past episodes, illuminating the origins of Antigone’s struggle with her uncle Creon, and with her own convictions.
The adaptation featured original music written by Daniel Deorksen, Jessica Harvey, Courtney Lancaster and Keegan Macintosh, which was inspired by the text - in particular the laments of Antigone and the Chorus. The music, which underscored the entire piece, was performed and sung by the actors using acoustic and electric instruments, including drums, guitars and a flute.
The 2007 workshop featured Marijka Brusse (Costume Designer), Cameron Crookston (Director), Daniel Deorksen (Eteocles/Polynices), Kayla Deorksen (Messenger), Even Frayne (Oedipus), Jessica Harvey (Antigone), Lauchlin Johnston (Set/Lighting Design), Courtney Lancaster (Ismene), Keegan Macintosh (Director/Heyman), David Newham (Creon) and Joanna Rannelli (Tireseus).
