A Good Woman of Setzuan is a re-imagining of Bertolt Brecht’s musical parable about the struggle to live a moral life in a society corrupted by greed and selfishness. Three Gods visit the mythical city of Setzuan in search of a “good” person, only to find one in a humble prostitute named Shen Te. But soon a gift from the Gods forces Shen Te to invent an alter ego in order to protect herself and her new-found wealth.Staged in the lush environmental setting of the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, this groundbreaking Seven Tyrants production gives audiences a unique opportunity to enjoy one of the 20th century’s greatest plays in one of Vancouver’s top attractions.
A Good Woman of Setzuan is a wildly entertaining examination of the relationship between economic systems and the moral standards they produce. In true Seven Tyrants fashion, A Good Woman of Setzuan draws from several translations of Brecht’s original German tale, to present a streamlined re-telling that modern audiences are sure to enjoy. The production features an original musical score and choreography performed live by the multi-talented cast.
